Review – The Me You Love in the Dark #3

Issue #3

Ro becomes even more intimate with whoever, or whatever, is haunting the old house as she finds the spark of inspiration for her most personal paintings yet.

Writer SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, Deadpool, Strange Academy) and artist JORGE CORONA (NO. 1 WITH A BULLET, Super Sons, Feathers) follow up their
critically acclaimed series MIDDLEWEST with a brand-new haunting tale. Fans of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman will enjoy this beautiful, dark, and disturbing story of discovery, love, and terror.

Writer: Skottie Young

Young’s hauntingly beautiful tale continues with artist Ro starting to grow and develop her relationship with the “entity” in a personal and intimate way. They share movie nights together, chat through the holidays and “it” seems to want to pay her more and more compliments, but this is getting in the way of her work slightly.

Every page seems steeped in a kind of romantic sadness as you are drawn in through each panel, there is a tender but concerning ending to the issue but I’ll leave you to buy the book and not spoil it.

Artist: Jorge Corona

There is a sadness that overcomes you when you see how Corona’s artwork shows the blossoming relationship over a touching two-page spread we see Ro kissing the entity but as her eyes close the creature transforms again into the multi-eyed horror we saw at the end of issue #2. The colours and lettering add the final touches to the creature with Piekos and Beaulieu’s dark touches to its disembodied speech.

Overall Thoughts

I’m really getting into this book but it only has two issues left to deliver the expected sad ending that it is setting up. Ro is such a likeable but tortured soul that anchors the strange story in a way relatable to many lonely people.

T'was a cold dark night in East Kilbride... and below the roundabouts, something old and ancient began to shudder awake. The world would rue the day that it gave the Green Jaguar comics to read!
